Decoder ("we", "us") is a browser extension (and companion web app) that
translates social-media posts into plain English. It is designed to run
without a server of ours: translations use your own AI provider key
or your local model, so your post text never touches our
infrastructure. This policy explains the little we handle and why.
The short version
We run no server in the translation path. There is no
Decoder account and no sign-in.
The text you decode is sent directly from your browser to
the AI provider you choose with your key - or, in local
mode, never leaves your machine.
We never receive, log, or store your posts, translations, or API key.
No ads, no third-party trackers, no data selling.
What stays on your device
Preferences (provider, model, options) - in your
browser's local storage.
Your API key (if you use bring-your-own-key mode) - stored
only in your browser and sent only to the provider you selected.
Free-trial count & license status - in your browser's
local storage.
A local cache of recent results, so repeat decodes are
instant. Clearable by removing the extension.
How the extension uses permissions

activeTab / scripting and site host
permissions (LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, YouTube) -
read the specific post text you choose to translate and add the inline
buttons.
api.anthropic.com / api.openai.com - send your text to
the provider you chose, using your key.
localhost (Ollama) - talk to your own local model, if you
use local mode. This stays entirely on your machine.
api.lemonsqueezy.com - validate your one-time license
key.
Third-party processors
Anthropic / OpenAI - only if you choose them as your
provider. Your text is sent to produce a result and is subject to their data
policies. In local (Ollama) mode, no third party is involved.
Lemon Squeezy - processes your one-time license purchase
and validates your license key. We never see your card details.
Data retention & deletion
Because we don't collect your posts or translations, there's nothing on our
side to delete. Everything Decoder stores lives in your browser - remove the
extension (or clear its storage) to erase it.
